Conservation groups are again challenging Alaska LNG’s export approval from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), arguing the agency’s latest environmental assessment should have measured the project’s potential contribution to climate change.

The Sierra Club and the Center for Biological Diversity submitted a petition to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia (DC) Circuit asking it to direct the DOE to reconsider its export approval and prepare a new environmental impact statement (EIS).

Along with questioning the DOE’s review process, project opponents questioned the agency’s assertion that the 2.6 Bcf/d liquefied natural gas export project is in the public interest given that private firms have yet to sign up for offtake or equity.
