The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded $8 million to three projects that aim to strengthen hydroelectric power’s ability to support the changing grid.

Pumped-storage hydropower (PSH) is capable of storing large amounts of low-cost renewable energy. One of the main challenges facing the hydropower industry is the gaps in information on how to optimize PSH operations to be flexible in relation to an evolving grid, according to the DOE’s Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO).

“Hydropower already supports our grid by providing energy generation and storage, and these projects will enhance these contributions while helping us reach our climate goals,” said Kelly Speakes-Backman, the principal deputy assistant for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
