Coral Energy and Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC)formed an alliance to co-market power generated by WFEC throughoutthe Southwest Power Pool and adjoining areas. The alliance willmarket all power generated by WFEC in excess of that consumed byits cooperative member companies.

The alliance combines the physical and technical capabilities ofWestern Farmers with Coral Energy’s financial, marketing and riskmanagement expertise. “Coral can build customized packages aroundthe power commodity generated by Western Farmers,” said Jim Whalen,Coral chief operating officer.

The agreement to form the alliances was completed in November,and already has resulted in a number of market transactions. Termsof the agreement were not released. This deal is in line with ShellOil’s emerging power generation business. Shell also plans toundertake other alliances as well as larger and more diverse powergeneration projects, including cogeneration, merchant plants andgeneration asset acquisitions in the United States and Mexico.Coral is one of North America’s largest energy and financialservices companies. Western Farmers Electric Cooperative,headquartered in Anadarko, OK, is a power generation andtransmission cooperative serving customers throughout Oklahoma andthe Southwest Power Pool.
