After a busy year of purchasing electricity generating capacity,Allegheny Energy reported growth in both fourth quarter earnings aswell as year-end totals over 1999 levels. The company posted recordyear-end earnings of $313.7 million ($2.84ÿper share), beforeextraordinary charges, an increase of 8% over comparable 1999earnings of $307.2 million ($2.64ÿper share).

The company attributed the growth to continued strongperformance from its supply, power, communications and solutionssubsidiaries. Allegheny Energy Supply said that through variousacquisitions and planned construction projects, it expects to havealmost 13,000 MW in its generating portfolio, an increase of 51%from the company’s end of 1999 total.

Allegheny Power — the regulated energy delivery business —acquired Mountaineer Gas and West Virginia Power to strengthen itsposition. The subsidiary is also leading the development of PJMWest, a regional transmission entity that will affiliate with PJMto oversee the region’s transmission network.
