General Electric unit GE Oil & Gas Wednesday said it has been awarded contracts to supply natural gas compression trains for Dominion Cove Point’s liquefaction project in Lusby, MD, which would give the existing import terminal export capability.

GE agreed to supply two Frame 7EA DLN1 (dry low nitrogen oxide) gas turbine packages to drive the GE refrigeration compressors. The design would have the capacity to produce about 5.25 million metric tons per year (mmty) of liquefied natural gas (LNG), according to GE.

“This latest project underscores just how important LNG technology is to the natural gas industry as this sector undergoes dramatic new changes driven by an abundance of natural gas,” the Houston-based company said.

The technology being supplied to the Richmond, VA-based Dominion subsidiary consists of GE’s MS7001 EA industrial gas turbines, which feature DLN technology and provide 86 MW shaft power while reducing emissions.

GE announced its role in the Dominion Cove Point gas export project at the 17th International Conference & Exhibition on LNG in Houston.

In filing its application for the export project at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission this month, Dominion Cove Point disclosed that it has fully subscribed the offered marketed capacity at its proposed export facility for 20 years (see Daily GPI, April 2). The facility would have a marketed capacity of up to 5.75 mmty, of which only 4.6 mmty now is being marketed. Dominion plans to transport on a firm basis 860,000 Dth/d of natural gas from existing pipeline interconnects with the Cove Point Pipeline to the LNG terminal.

Pacific Summit Energy LLC, a U.S. affiliate of Japanese trading company Sumitomo Corp., and GAIL Global (USA) LNG LLC, a U.S. affiliate of GAIL (India) Ltd., have each contracted for half of the marketed capacity at the terminal for 20 years. The Sumitomo agreement is linked to a Henry Hub price index.

Additionally, Sumitomo has agreements to serve Tokyo Gas Co. and Kansai Electric Power Co. Inc. GAIL is the largest natural gas processing and distribution company in India.
