Williams’ Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line filed a FERC application for a $73 million expansion project that will provide 165,000 Dth/d of new firm transportation capacity for markets in the greater Washington, DC, and Baltimore, MD, metropolitan areas. The Potomac Expansion, which will involve pipeline looping at several locations in Virginia, is scheduled for service in November 2007.

“The Potomac expansion project is one of many steps that we are taking to alleviate capacity constraints and ensure the availability and deliverability of clean energy to the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States,” said Phil Wright, president of Williams’ natural gas pipeline business. “We appreciate our shippers’ willingness to commit to this project and look forward to working with them to provide reliable natural gas service for years to come.”

The expansion will require 16.5 miles of new 42-inch diameter pipeline that will loop the company’s existing mainline system in Pittsylvania and Campbell counties in Virginia. In addition, the company will replace 3.5 miles of pipe in Fairfax County, VA. Construction is expected to begin next summer. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) recently approved construction of a $121 million Transco expansion, which will provide 100,000 Dth/d of new firm transportation service to KeySpan on Long Island from the Leidy Hub in Pennsylvania. The capacity from the project is being combined with 50,000 Dth/d of existing firm capacity that was relinquished during a recent open season. That expansion also is scheduled to be in service in November 2007 (see Daily GPI, May 23).
