In a victory for the natural gas and coal industry, the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday curtailed the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from power plants.

In a 6-3 decision, the high court sided with plaintiffs, including the coal-producing states of West Virginia and North Dakota, as well as North American Coal Corp. and Westmoreland Mining Holdings LLC.

The justices reversed a federal appeals court ruling that had nullified the Trump administration’s Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) rule.
