TransCanada PipeLines Ltd. of Calgary, Alberta, completedEnerg¡a Mayakan, a $266 million, 435-mile gas pipeline in Mexico’sYucatan peninsula. The pipeline is expected to go into commercialoperation by the end of September.

Energ¡a Mayakan is the first TransCanada-owned and operatedpipeline in Mexico. It is also the first pipeline of its kind inMexico to have been awarded to the private sector. TransCanada hasa 62.5% interest in Energ¡a Mayakan. Other partners includeInterGen, 32.5%; and Gutsa Constructions, 5%.

With a capacity that will grow to about 370 MMcf/d, the 24-inchEnerg¡a Mayakan pipeline will transport gas from Ciudad Pemex, inTabasco, to new power plants in Campeche and Yucat n. It will alsodeliver gas to customers along the pipeline route as well asseveral power plants being converted to burn gas.
