Because TC Energy Corp. canceled plans to move forward on the Keystone XL oil pipeline, a federal court declared a lawsuit that challenged President Biden’s authority to revoke the presidential permit as moot.

On his first day of office in January 2021, President Biden kept a 2020 election promise to scrap the permit granted by the Trump administration, which allowed XL to begin construction. 

President Biden said at the time the Keystone XL system “disserves the U.S. national interest” because the “United States and the world face a climate crisis.” Leaving the permit in place “would not be consistent with the administration’s economic and climate imperatives.”
