Two key divisions of California’s Department of Water Resources (DWR) have chosen Altra Energy Technologies Inc.’s energy transaction software, Altra Power, to assist in the scheduling and settlement processes associated with CDWR’s statewide power purchases.

Earlier this year, California Gov. Gray Davis directed the DWR to buy power on behalf of the state’s investor-owned utilities to help bring stability to the state during its energy crisis. Since that time, two DWR divisions, California Energy Resource Scheduling and the State Water Project, have purchased enterprise-wide licenses of Altra Power to assist them in more efficiently scheduling energy transactions in the California power grid.

Altra Technology last Wednesday said that the installation of its software represents a technology and infrastructure upgrade for scheduling and settling power transactions through the California independent system operator.

“Our product will ensure that the information required for settlement with providers is accurate, auditable and secure,” said Altra President and CEO Paul Bourke. “Altra Power makes it possible for the [DWR] to focus on the task at hand — energy procurement and delivery — rather than focusing on data management issues,” he added.

On a separate front, Altra Energy also announced that it has begun operations within the New York independent system operator market through one of its subsidiaries. Trading within zones A, G and J, Altra said that its ePower broker is the first major independent online exchange to have a presence in the New York market.
