Northern States Power Co. issued a request for proposals (RFP) for up to 1,200 MW of power generation capacity and associated energy for a period of 10 years, beginning sometime between May 1, 2003, and May 1, 2005. NSP will use the additional resources to meet increased retail customer demand. NSP is seeking peaking, intermediate and base-load resources. The RFP is open to all sources of power, including renewable resources. NSP will select winning proposals based on cost, environmental impact and delivery guarantees. Before awarding the contract(s), NSP will submit the evaluation of the proposals to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) for review. For a copy of the RFP or more information, contact David L. Zuck at (612) 330-6452. He also may be reached via fax, (612) 330-5868, or e-mail, david.l.zuck@nspco.com.

energyOn.com, America's Online Energy Store, launched its Web site at www.energyon.com, targeting residential and commercial consumers in Ohio who are currently undergoing gas deregulation. Users can compare prices, services and providers, as well as research products. Once they have made decisions, they can sign up with a provider of choice. energyOn.com operates as a consumer resource and is not a competitive energy supplier. The choices deregulation offers can be confusing. "That is why we offer a site which provides simple, straightforward answers to consumers' questions, and we lay out the choices in a clear and concise fashion which helps them make more informed decisions," said Ken Soule, executive vice president for partnership development. energyOn.com plans to extend its service to New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania soon.

Newfield Exploration is buying from Phillips Petroleum interests in 42 leases in 22 Gulf of Mexico fields for about $22 million. Newfield expects to be named operator in six of the fields. The price and interests to be acquired will be subject to customary adjustments, including the possible exercise of preferential third-party purchase rights. Newfield explores, develops and acquires oil and gas properties principally in the Gulf of Mexico and has operating activities in the onshore Gulf Coast and offshore Australia and China.
