Unlike home heating demand amid one of the mildest winters on record, industrial consumption of natural gas is holding relatively steady due to ongoing robust economic activity and energy needs in the U.S. manufacturing sector.

Industrial gas demand averaged 24.0 Bcf/d over the 30-day period through last week, according to Wood Mackenzie data. That was down modestly from 24.7 Bcf/d during the comparable period a year earlier. Residential and commercial demand, in contrast, was just shy of 29.0 Bcf/d for the recent 30-day period, down by more than 7.0 Bcf/d year/year and the main reason overall gas consumption was down about 8.0 Bcf/d.

Industrial consumption provides an undercurrent of price support in factory-driven corners of the Midwest and Northeast regions, among others.
