Declines in both oil and natural gas drilling saw the U.S. rig count drop five units overall to 664 for the week ending Friday (July 28), the latest figures from Baker Hughes Co. (BKR) show.

Three natural gas-directed rigs exited the patch domestically for the period, alongside one oil-directed rig and one miscellaneous unit. The 664 active U.S. rigs as of Friday compares with 767 rigs running in the year-earlier period, the BKR data show.

A decline of seven land rigs was partially offset by the addition of one Gulf of Mexico rig and one rig operating in inland waters, according to the BKR numbers, which are partly based on data from Enverus.
