Electric grid operators said they are ready to meet power consumption this summer except in extreme circumstances, with natural gas-fired generation comprising the lion’s share of the sources expected to handle the peak loads.

The largest U.S. grid operator, PJM Interconnection, said it has more than 186,000 MW of installed generating capacity, with reserve resources available to cover historical summer generation outage scenarios.

PJM is projecting peak summer demand at about 156,000 MW. In addition, it has performed reliability studies at loads nearing 163,000 MW for the 65 million people it serves across 13 states and the District of Columbia.
