UN Report Blames Less Production, Outside Speculators for Commodity Prices

The upward pressure on energy and other commodity prices worldwide has been because of the “sluggish response of production to rising demand, particularly for energy and metals and minerals,” according to a United Nations report issued Thursday. However, the influx over the last three years of a large number of speculators with no interest in the commodity itself “may have distorted” near term and futures prices.

Mirant Shareholder Balks at NRG Bid; Goldman Sachs Exits

One of Mirant Corp.’s largest shareholders and a creditor in its three-year Chapter 11 bankruptcy process on Thursday asked the company to drop its attempt at a hostile takeover of NRG Energy and instead put the company up for sale. Connecticut-based Pirate Capital LLC, the portfolio manager of the investment fund, wrote to Mirant’s CEO and directors, saying investors are “concerned” about the offer to buy NRG.

BP Reports 4% Increase in 4Q Production

British Petroleum said Wednesday that it expects its fourth quarter worldwide production to be up about 4% from 4Q2003 to 4.09 million boe/d mainly because of increases in Russia. However, higher taxes in Russia and costs associated with damage from Hurricane Ivan in the Gulf off Mexico and a blowout at an Egyptian offshore platform will take a bite out of its earnings.
