Excelerate’s Gulf Gateway Energy Bridge Port Receives First LNG Shipment

After a less than 15 month construction period, The Woodlands, TX-based Excelerate Energy LLC announced last week that its Gulf Gateway Energy Bridge Deepwater Port has received its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo successfully. The Gulf Gateway — located offshore Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico — is the world’s first offshore receiving facility and the first new LNG regasification facility in North America in over 20 years.

Two LNG Projects Ink Construction Contracts

Construction contracts for two major LNG projects were awarded this week. Dominion handed the 800 MMcf/d Cove Point expansion project to The Woodlands, TX-based CB&I, which built some of the existing facilities at Cove Point, MD. Cheniere Energy awarded a contract to build its Sabine Pass LNG terminal to San Francisco-based Bechtel.

Woodlands, TX-based Excelerate Energy LLC, which acquired the rights to El Paso’s Energy Bridge assets and technology last year, is well on its way toward having the world’s first offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in service in the Gulf of Mexico by December or next January, said company president Kathleen Eisbrenner in an interview with NGI last week. Eisbrenner believes the project will be an eye opener for companies that have been struggling with local opposition to their proposed onshore LNG terminals.

The transaction includes El Paso’s proposed offshore Louisiana Energy Bridge terminal, which is awaiting licensing by the U.S. Department of Transportation, as well as deployment of additional offshore LNG terminals worldwide. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Woodlands, TX-based Mitchell Energy & Development Corp. reported Monday that the previously announced secondary offering of Class A Common Stock has closed. Under the offering, founder and CEO George P. Mitchell sold 4,681,200 shares at $53.00 per share, including an over-allotment of 181,200 shares purchased by the underwriters. The move follows comments Mr. Mitchell made last Wednesday regarding interest in purchasing the company from potential buyers (see Daily GPI, May, 10). Analysts said last week that with Mitchell selling some of his personal stock, the company would be more attractive to outside investors.
