Citing limited operational flexibility to manage imbalances over the long holiday weekend, Tennessee issued a systemwide Balancing Alert for Saturday that required all delivery point operators to keep actual daily takes from the system equal to or greater than scheduled quantities, and all receipt point operators to keep actual daily receipts into the system equal to or less than scheduled quantities. The requirement applied in each case regardless of the operator’s cumulative imbalance position.

Obama Orders Lease Sales in Alaska, Off East Coast

In a surprising shift in policy, President Obama announced over the weekend that his administration plans to open previously closed areas in Alaska, off the Atlantic Coast and in new areas of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) to oil and natural gas drilling, at the same time extending some current leases. Obama said he nevertheless supports a Senate bill to cut billions of dollars of subsidies for producers.

Futures Rally on Cries That Spring Has Not Yet Sprung

Those who viewed the lackluster morning trade and forecasted a quiet lead into the weekend for natural gas futures were sorely mistaken as a fierce round of short-covering was sparked just before 2 p.m. EDT. April natural gas futures reached a high of $4.425 before closing out the regular session at $4.403, up 15.9 cents from Thursday’s close.

BP: New Well Cap to Be Installed Soon

Over the weekend BP plc began replacing the lower marine riser package (LMRP) containment cap over the Deepwater Horizon’s failed blowout preventer with a new sealing cap assembly. On Monday COO Doug Suttles said the company expected to install the new cap later in the day.
