There is no green bullet that will allow various alternative energy and efficiency technologies to replace fossil fuels, which are in shorter supply than most people will acknowledge, according to a report from a six-year-old California think tank, the Post Carbon Institute, and a more mature International Forum on Globalization (IFG), founded in the early 1990s in San Francisco. As a result, the world generally has far less time than is currently thought for an energy “transition” period, an official with the institute told NGI Friday.

Hearings Set for Avista Rate Case
The Idaho Public Utilities Commission (PUC) will hold a series of public hearings in various parts of the state served by Spokane, WA-based Avista Utilities to gain public input on Avista’s proposed general rate increases of $2.7 million for natural gas and $31.2 million for electricity utility customers, or 3% and 12.8%, respectively, the PUC said Friday.

CIG said various operating conditions related to gas loading factors in its Segment 118, located in the Oklahoma Panhandle, have caused variations in pressure that affect the pressure needed to deliver gas to the east end delivery points of Segment 118. “To assist in controlling these varying pressure levels, CIG will establish a new constraint point: Beaver East (BEC) between Beaver…and Floris (FRS),” the pipeline said. The operationally available capacity at this point will be 210 MMcf/d beginning Thursday. The new BEC constraint point will limit deliveries to FRS, Forgan, Mocane and Mid-America, CIG said, but it will not affect firm primary nominations.

Western Gas Completes $210M Anadarko Assets Purchase
Houston-based Western Gas Partners LP Monday closed its $210 million purchase of all or parts of various Powder River Basin processing and gathering infrastructure from Anadarko Petroleum Corp., which previously formed Western and eventually spun it off. Some of the purchase involves percentage interests in the Anadarko assets.
14 States Urge EPA Action on Global Warming
Attorneys general from 14 states, along with various state and city authorities, last Monday jointly urged the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to take action to address global warming. California Attorney General Edmund G. Brown called for a reversal of what he called EPA’s “shameful inaction” by the federal agency.
