MMS GOM Lease Sale Sets All-Time Record

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) Central Gulf of Mexico (GOM) Lease Sale 206 Wednesday set an all-time record for the value of high bids received with a total of nearly $3.68 billion out of more than $5.74 billion in total bids, the MMS said.

After Six-Day Tumble, Futures Jump Above $7, Settle Up 4.2 Cents

After losing nearly a dollar in value in a week, dropping to $6.689 Thursday from $7.651 on Wednesday, Aug. 9, near-month gas futures staged a somewhat surprising reversal on Friday on technical factors and in response to an increase in tropical activity. The September contract soared to a daily high of $7.090 just after 1 p.m. before backtracking to end the day up only 4.2 cents at $6.731.

ConocoPhillips Rumored To Be in Talks to Buy Burlington Resources

A strong North American natural gas position appears to be regaining its value for the majors. As domestic natural gas futures prices continue to trade in the uncharted territory of $14-15, rumors were circulating Monday about Houston-based ConocoPhillips taking an interest in buying Burlington Resources, also Houston-based. The Wall Street Journal reported that the two companies are in “advanced talks” on a deal valued in excess of $30 billion.

Soaring fuel prices, which slashed the value of unwinding energy trading contracts collapsed Williams’ 3Q earnings by 96%, the company reported Thursday. However, the Tulsa-based company raised its profit forecast for the year on the continued strong performances of its other three major business units: exploration and production (E&P), natural gas pipelines and midstream processing.
