The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) has approved an emergency rate increase for former customers of Paramount Natural Gas Co. who are now served by Southeastern Natural Gas Co. Under the terms of the ruling, a typical customer currently paying $76.52 will see his bill increase to $81.74 for 8 Mcf per month.

Alberta Regulators Shoot Down Shell’s Drilling Plans

The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board dealt a blow to Shell Canada Ltd. by rejecting an application to drill a prime target that the company wanted badly enough to invest more than two years in seeking approval. The dramatic regulatory setback has left industry executives voicing hope that it was an isolated case and confirmed that the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers has been right to target access to drilling targets as a priority issue.

Upstate New York Utilities to Merge

Albany-based Energy East Corp., parent of New York StateElectric and Gas, is spending $1.4 billion to acquire RGS EnergyGroup, creating a Empire State powerhouse that would serve almostthree million customers, including half of those in upstate NewYork. The boards of both companies approved the deal last week.Energy East also will assume about $1 billion of RGS Energy debt.
