Cash Prices Mixed, Volatile on Uncertainty Over Gulf Outages

The cash market was mixed Tuesday because of slightly weaker futures prices (October down 3.4 cents to $11.657) and continuing uncertainty over the status of Gulf production and the extent of the damage to Gulf infrastructure. Daily cash price changes were anywhere from down nearly $2 in the case of Florida Gas Transmission’s Zone 2 and 3 to up about 30 cents at a couple of Gulf Coast points.

Futures Settle Significantly Higher Following Supportive 58 Bcf Storage Injection

Natural gas futures trading on Thursday continued to reflect the industry’s uncertainty as to what the long-term ramifications of Hurricane Katrina will be on the commodity. After receiving a somewhat bullish 58 Bcf storage report, October natural gas seesawed back and forth for the remainder of the session before settling at a record $11.757, up 28.5 cents from Wednesday.

Futures Test $10 Again as Katrina’s Path Remains Uncertain

Powered by uncertainty on where Hurricane Katrina’s second landfall will be, September natural gas futures on Friday made another stab at the psychological $10 level. Ahead of its expiration on Monday, the contract matched Wednesday’s $10.02 high, but once again failed to test the all-time regular session high of $10.10.

Daunting Regulatory Reviews, Uncertainty Face El Paso NM Drilling Plans

With New Mexico state leaders on record as strongly opposed, a long federal review process is now under way on Houston-based El Paso Corp.’s plans to drill for coal-bed methane in a pristine national forest region in the north-northeast part of the state. Even with political help from the White House, El Paso has indicated in some local news reports that it may not be interested in pursuing drilling leases.
