Mirant Turns to Canada for Supply, Becomes Country’s Largest Marketer

Mirant Canada Energy Marketing Ltd. closed its purchase of TransCanada Gas Services from TransCanada PipeLines Ltd. last week opening the biggest energy trading floor in Canada with 80 specialists swinging into action in downtown Calgary’s newest office tower. The changing fortunes among energy merchants propelled Mirant into prominence north of the border at a time of high expectations and anxiety among producers alarmed by the Enron debacle.

No Relief in Sight for Weary Bulls

Bulls and bears took turns yesterday in the gas pit at Nymex as light buying pressure throughout the morning morphed subtly into selling interest in the afternoon. As a result, prices did not stray very far from center with most months able to eke out minimal advances for the session. The July contract finished at $3.747, which was 1.3 cents higher on the day.

Barrett Turns Back Shell’s Latest Offer

Denver-based Barrett Resources Corp. again played David to Goliath on Monday, announcing that its board of directors, “based upon opinions that it received from its financial advisers and other factors,” unanimously rejected as inadequate Shell Oil Co.’s $60 per share cash tender offer made last week (see Daily GPI, April 27). The board also recommended that shareholders not tender the Shell offer or grant any written consents that Shell might seek.

As Expected, Market Turns Lower on Storage Refill

On the heels of bearish storage data released yesterday afternoon and ahead of the three-day weekend, gas futures tumbled lower for the second time in the last eight trading sessions Wednesday as speculative longs headed for the exits. The May contract was thehardest hit by the selling. It tumbled 17.4 cents to close at $5.385. Nearly as battered was the 12-month strip, which took back 15.2 cents of its recent advance toclose at $5.479.
