Appalachian Producers Say Equitrans Proposal Would Triple Their Gathering Rates

A group of West Virginia oil and natural gas producers have called on FERC to block a proposal that would permit Equitrans LP to refunctionalize a portion of its transmission and storage facilities in order to create a “second tier” of gathering on its system, a move that producers say could result in the tripling of their existing gas gathering costs.

Northeast Keeps Plunging, Leads Overall Market Lower

The cash market was predictably weaker Friday, with continuing triple-digit and quadruple-digit plunges at Northeast citygates leading the trek downward. Non-Northeast losses were as small as a nickel, but mostly ranged between 20 and 90 cents.

Relatively Small Storage Fill Give Bulls Brief Boost Thursday

Breaking the string of triple-digit weekly storage refills at four, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) Thursday morning announced a 97 Bcf injection for the week ending June 27. Natural gas futures prices, which were already in the process of a cautious short-covering rally, used the smaller-than-expected refill as a springboard to higher levels. But after a quick spike to an intra-day high at $5.36, the August contract was hit with a steady barrage of selling late Thursday morning and early afternoon. August closed mixed at $5.226, 2.7 cents higher in Thursday’s holiday-abbreviated trading session.

Raymond James: Low NGL, Distillate Inventories Put Floor Under Gas Prices

From the triple-digit weekly gas storage injections in the last three EIA storage reports, analysts at Raymond James & Associates calculate that there has been a 3-4 Bcf/d decrease in gas demand from fuel switching and a 0.75 Bcf/d increase in gas supply because of gas liquids being left in the gas stream due to low liquids margins.

Storage Number Initiates Rally; Some Bears Unimpressed

Despite a third straight triple-digit weekly storage injection (114 Bcf), natural gas futures surged Thursday in three distinct waves of short-covering and speculative buying. When the dust had settled and the orders counted at Nymex, the numbers were impressive: July natural gas futures rose 36 cents to close at $5.941, just off its new one-week high of $5.95. In contrast to the first three trading days of this week, volume at Nymex was heavy Thursday, with an estimated 92,607 contracts changing hands.

Rockies/San Juan Dives Stand Out in Flat Market

Triple-digit plunges in the Rockies and San Juan Basin were greatly conspicuous among general flatness elsewhere in Wednesday’s trading. Only rarely did non-Rockies/San Juan points stray more than a few pennies up or down from unchanged as most of the nation was expected to continue seeing a mix of belated winter and springlike weather through at least Tuesday.

Mobile Gas Raises Rates 22% on Peak Gas Prices

With wholesale gas prices for March and April nearly triple what prices were for the same months in 2002, very little can be done to prevent some impact on utility customers. Despite forward purchasing, storage and other risk management practices, Mobile Gas in Alabama said its residential customers still will see a 22% increase in their rates.
