TransCanada Corp. will blaze a new trail toward economic development of northern natural gas in affordable stages by transferring the Nova pipeline grid in Alberta over to federal supervision, the National Energy Board (NEB) has been told.

At a ceremony last Monday formally opening Cheniere Energy Inc.’s Sabine Pass liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal and interconnecting Creole Trail Pipeline in Louisiana, Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman sharply criticized state officials who are opposing the development and construction of LNG facilities in other parts of the nation.

Hot on the acquisition trail, Direct Energy, a subsidiary of Centrica plc, has agreed to acquire all of the Canadian gas and oil assets of Calgary-based TransGlobe Energy Corp. for C$56.7 million, the company said. The transaction is expected to close by the beginning of May with an effective date of Jan. 1, 2008.

Islander East Pipeline, the long-planned 50-mile line under Long Island Sound, is continuing its tortuous trail through the regulatory maze, filing a complaint in U.S. District Court in Connecticut last week to stop state and local officials from interfering with offshore data-gathering activities necessary for design work for horizontal directional drilling.

Hitting the comeback trail, El Paso Corp. reported Tuesday its year-end 2005 proved natural gas and oil reserves totaled 2.7 Tcfe, up 22% from 2004. The total included El Paso’s share of proved reserves in Four Star Oil & Gas Co. During 2005, El Paso’s exploration and production (E&P) capital expenditures totaled $1.867 billion, and reserve replacement costs were estimated to be $2.36/Mcfe.
