Phillips Results Up Sharply, GPM Still on Block

Much like the rest of the majors, Phillips Petroleum is back ontrack in terms of strong financial results with $221 million in netincome in the third quarter, up from $46 million for the sameperiod last year. But CEO Jim Mulva said the sale of its midstreamGPM business, and possible “joint venturing” of its chemicals,refining and marketing operations are still on. The GPM sale isexpected to take place before the end of the year.

The Big Chill Puts Prices Back on Upward Track

Some Gulf Coast quotes were topping the $3 level Thursday ascash prices resumed climbing after Wednesday’s leveling-off period.Increases ranged from about a nickel in California to more than 15cents at New England citygates and on CNG in Appalachia. A risingfutures screen provided moderate support for cash, but thespreading of colder weather was the chief cause of the price gains,sources said. However, numbers were retreating in several marketsin late deals. A Gulf Coast producer was able to get only $2.90 ina very late Henry Hub trade after the point had been trading in thehigh $2.90s for most of the morning.

Electric Load Helps Generate Higher Gas Prices

Cash prices continued on an upward track Thursday, although thegains were a bit smaller than those posted Wednesday. A fewincreases barely exceeded a nickel, such as at Waha and the HoustonShip Channel, where Texas air conditioning load is growing.Northeast citygates tended to go up about a nickel as a sourcereported storage demand rising there now that the injection seasonis under way. Most other points rose between 2 and 4 cents. It’sthe same old story about why the market has been fairly strong thisweek, a trader said-power generation load, a firm screen andwestern cold.
