The mega-utility merger of Consolidated Edison (ConEd) andNortheast Utilities (NU) could be called off today. NU has toldConEd to provide assurances by 5 p.m. Monday that it intends to gothrough with the deal or else face legal action.

TransCanada, NGTL Contemplate Expansions

TransCanada PipeLines and Nova Gas Transmission (NGTL) toldtheir shippers they are looking into expanding their pipelinesystems to increase deliveries to the Pacific Northwest. Thecompanies plan to assess the feasibility of expansions of NGTL andTransCanada’s BC System in British Columbia and are offeringshippers the opportunity to “rationalize” their firm contractholdings on those systems effective November 2002.

ConEd, NU Merger Could Be On Ice

The mega-utility merger of Consolidated Edison (ConEd) andNortheast Utilities (NU) may be on ice. NU has told ConEd toprovide assurances by 9 a.m. Friday that it intends to go throughwith the deal or else face legal action. The only remainingregulatory hurdle for the $3.8 billion merger (excluding $3.9billion in NU debt) is a letter of approval from the Securities andExchange Commission (SEC), which is expected by mid-March.
