Massachusetts Firm Rescues California Carbon Capture Plan

Concord, MA-based independent power producer SCS Energy plans to take over a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project tied to a proposed integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power generation plant in the heart of the oil-rich southern San Joaquin Valley near Elk Hills. Earlier this year BP plc and Rio Tinto pulled out of the joint venture project centered on Hydrogen Energy California (HECA).

An Oregon Circuit Court Tuesday ordered Clatsop County to restore its earlier approval of a 41-mile natural gas transmission pipeline project tied to the proposed Oregon LNG receiving terminal for liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the mouth of the Columbia River.

Futures Probe Lower After 914 Cloud Dissipates

Still reeling from the bludgeoning Thursday tied to a round of bearish natural gas supply news, the natural gas futures market continued to sink closer to the $3.810 low for the larger downtrend. June futures recorded a low of $3.885 before closing at $3.920 Friday, down 6 cents from Thursday’s finish and 42.3 cents below the previous week’s close.

Sempra Reaches $410M Settlement, Takes Earnings Hit

Sempra Energy and California officials announced Wednesday they had reached a $410 million agreement in principle resolving substantially all of the remaining litigation tied to the state’s 2000-01 wholesale energy crisis. The deal requires FERC approval, which the parties said they expect before the end of this year.

Sempra Faces Possible $55M Hit on Liberty Storage

San Diego-based Sempra Energy’s aggressive natural gas pipeline and storage plays, particularly tied to the Gulf of Mexico, could take a hit of up to $55 million if current assessments of the cavern prove negative in its salt dome Liberty Storage project in Louisiana, Sempra CEO Donald Felsinger said in an earnings conference call last Tuesday. Definitive information should be available in the next two to three months, he said.
