Southwestern Says It Can Keep Up with New Fayetteville Players

Two big-ticket acquisitions in the Fayetteville Shale by BHP Billiton Petroleum and XTO Energy Inc. suggest that the pace of development in the play will be accelerating, acknowledged Steve Mueller, CEO of Fayetteville veteran Southwestern Energy Co. But his company can hold its own, having locked in some of its costs and beaten down drilling times, Mueller said.

Natural gas futures continued to test the upside Friday after support at $4 held earlier in the week. The July contract recorded a high of $4.399 before closing Friday’s regular session at $4.341, up 4.7 cents from Thursday’s finish and 23.5 cents higher than the previous week’s close.

Recent Weakness Keeping Traders Wary; June Falls 1.8 Cents

Natural gas futures slid lower in uninspired trading Monday and traders have begun to question the markets ability to test the upper end of its trading range. June futures fell 1.8 cents to $4.017 and July shed 3.1 cents to $4.075. July crude oil added 17 cents but the remaining contract months posted losses.
