After venturing above the psychological $7 level in Monday morning trade, November natural gas futures slipped lower. Following the lead of petroleum futures, the natural gas prompt month began its descent at 11 a.m. (EDT), settling at $6.806. Despite the drop from the $7.03 high on the day, the prompt month still squeezed out a 9.7-cent increase on the day.

After trading within the $5.12-5.18 range for a majority of the day, September natural gas futures used the final half hour of the regular trading session to make another run at the psychological $5 mark before expiration.

Continuing to scratch new lows as it approaches expiry, the September natural gas futures contract in overnight Access trading and the regular session Tuesday carved out lows of $5.25 and $5.26, respectively, the lowest the contract has traded since Feb. 25, when it notched $5.22.

Continuing the seesaw motion of trading over and under the $6 mark over the past couple of weeks, September natural gas futures on Monday dropped 29.9 cents to settle at $5.813. Action was fairly lively on the day as 93,882 contracts changed hands.
