Coast Guard Begins Safety Review of LNG Tanker Traffic in Maine, Canadian Bay

The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Northern New England has started reviewing the safety and security issues of liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker traffic through Passamaquoddy Bay and its approaches to Mill Cove and Split Rock, ME, in conjunction with FERC’s permitting process for Downeast LNG’s proposed $400 million terminal and Quoddy Bay LLC’s LNG project in Maine.

LNG Tanker Truck Burns East of Reno, Nearby Evacuations Ordered

The cargo of a tanker truck reported to be carrying liquefied natural gas (LNG) caught fire on a stretch of Interstate Highway 80 about 30 miles east of Reno, NV, causing the highway to be shut in both directions and residents and businesses within a one-mile radius evacuated. A pipeline safety engineer from the Nevada Public Utilities Commission was headed to the scene early in the afternoon for a fire that broke out near a truck rest stop about 11 a.m. PDT.

Venezuelan LNG Headed to U.S. East Coast

About 10 Tcf of gas stranded offshore Venezuela could be headed to the U.S. East Coast via liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker starting in 2007, according to a new partnership formed by Venezuelan state-owned oil company Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), Royal Dutch/Shell Group and Mitsubishi Corp. The companies signed an agreement to spend $2.5 billion on a new LNG project on the Paria peninsula. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2005 and be completed two years later.

MA Gov. Expects LNG Shipments to Resume Within Weeks

Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift anticipates that Boston Harbor will resume liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker traffic in the near term, “possibly [in] only a matter of weeks,” said a spokeswoman for the governor.
