Dallas-based gas marketer ICC Energy Corp. is suing Chesapeake Energy Corp., several subsidiaries and individuals, claiming the company reneged on a commitment to partner with ICC on the marketing of gas produced from the Barnett Shale at Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport.

Natural gas hedge fund Amaranth LLC, which exploded in a $6.4 billion debacle last year, has turned the tables and is suing J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. for $1 billion for the bank’s alleged role in the fund’s demise.

Hedge fund Pirate Capital LLC said last week it is suing to block Aquila Inc. from selling its Missouri electric utilities — Missouri Public Service and St. Joseph Light and Power — to Great Plains Energy Inc., parent of Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L) for $1.7 billion in cash and stock plus assumption of $1 billion of Aquila debt.

Multiple environmental groups are suing the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for authorizing Bill Barrett Corp. to conduct the Stone Cabin 3-D seismic gas exploration project on the West Tavaputs Plateau of eastern Utah this summer, possibly endangering cultural resources, such as rock art, cliff dwellings and other structures in nearby Nine Mile Canyon.
