Coalbed Development Incentives Get Limited Support in Alberta
After almost two years of study, a provincial committee has recommended offering Alberta’s budding coalbed methane developers only a limited financial incentive to grow faster. Instead of copying generous inducements which helped launch coal gas in the United States and that British Columbia has adopted, the Alberta proposal is a temporary grant for field research.
MMS Head: Administration Would ‘Seriously’ Review Moratorium if States Seek to Opt Out
The Bush administration “would seriously again study” its own moratorium on oil and natural gas drilling for an individual coastal state if Congress “signified that the state wanted to move off the moratorium,” the head of the Minerals and Management Services (MMS) told a Senate panel last Tuesday.

Study Finds Average 13.2 Bcf Error in Analysts’ Weekly Storage Predictions
Each week dozens of prognosticators toss out their predictions of the weekly gas storage change, the most significant piece of supply and demand information available in the gas market today. But it’s surprising to know that on average the predictions of 34 top firms, including five energy companies, 28 financial houses and one energy consulting firm, have been off by about 13.2 Bcf/week since the Energy Information Administration (EIA) took over the survey from the American Gas Association in May 2002.

Conoco Begins Seismic Study of Laurentian Basin
ConocoPhillips Canada has begun seismic exploration of the Laurentian sub-basin off the south coast of Newfoundland, the first step to map a seabed that could hold an estimated 6 Tcf of natural gas and up to 700 million bbl of oil. If the seismic surveys show promise, the Houston-based major could begin deepwater drilling by 2007, the company said.
