Not-So-Great Expectations for Producers

ConocoPhillips on Wednesday was among the first in line among U.S.-based producers to issue a 4Q2006 earnings report, underwhelming investors on the news that its profit slid 13% from a year ago. However, the Houston-based company probably won’t be the last to report tempered profits during a quarter with warmer-than-normal temperatures, soaring service costs and falling energy prices.

Futures Drop 31.4 Cents as Lack of Weather Remains Key Driver

After January natural gas futures failed to stay below the psychological $7 level on Tuesday, traders made sure the move to sub-$7 levels stuck on Wednesday. The contract spiraled to a low of $6.760 before settling at $6.769, down a significant 31.4 cents on the day.

Earth at Its Warmest in 400 Years, Report Says

Hotter temperatures year-round could be here to stay, according to a new report on global temperatures by a National Research Council committee. The council said there is “sufficient evidence” from tree rings, boreholes, retreating glaciers, and other “proxies” of past surface temperatures to say with a high level of confidence that the last few decades of the 20th century were warmer than any comparable period in the last 400 years.

Futures Reverse Course, Break Back Above $14

After repeated attempts over the last week to break below and stay below the $12.70 support area, November natural gas on Tuesday went in the opposite direction instead. Going against current fundamental indicators, the prompt month soared to a high of $14.375 before settling at $14.338, a level $1.334 higher than Monday’s settle. November natural gas expires Thursday.
