Bellevue, WA-based Puget Sound Energy (PSE) said last Tuesday it has completed an 18-month, $44 million expansion of the Pacific Northwest’s major natural gas storage reservoir, Jackson Prairie in Lewis County, WA. The facility now is capable of meeting a quarter of the region’s peak winter gas demand, PSE said.

Strong earnings from all of Spectra Energy’s business segments, due primarily to higher commodity prices and sound operating performance in all underlying businesses, resulted in net income of $296 million (48 cents/share) in 3Q2008, up 26% from $234 million (37 cents/share) in 3Q2007, the company said.

The investor consortium seeking to buy Puget Sound Energy (PSE) said last Wednesday that the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (WUTC) has notified all parties in the case that a final step in the regulatory process — the filing of reply briefs — is scheduled for Oct. 23, after which the state regulatory panel can make its final determination. That is the last remaining regulatory approval needed to close the $7.4 billion deal.

Puget Sound Energy’s (PSE) retail rates for natural gas will increase Wednesday, the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (WUTC) forewarned PSE utility customers Monday. The state regulators earlier approved an 11.1% rate increase, following the utility’s filing of a purchased gas adjustment (PGA) request (see Daily GPI, Sept. 2).
