A diversified energy and communications company moving toward concentrating solely on energy operations, Rapid City, SD-based Black Hills Corp. said Thursday that its board of directors voted to make President/CEO David Emery the chairman of the board, effective immediately. He replaces Chairman Daniel Landguth who retires next month. A 15-year veteran with the company, Emery joined the board in January 2004 and before becoming CEO headed the retail services division and before that (1997-2003) he was responsible for the company’s fuel resources operations, including coal mining and oil/natural gas exploration and production. Landguth leaves the board May 25, after serving as Black Hills’ chairman for the past 14 years.

Week-Opening Rally Likely to Be Short-Lived

Prices rallied Monday almost solely on prior-Friday screen support and continued storage buying in the nascent injection season because weather-related demand remained in short supply. Snow and 30-degree high temperatures were expected on Tuesday only along the eastern slope of the Rockies in Colorado and Wyoming, The Weather Channel said, and a Calgary-based producer said that although overnight lows are in the 20s, daytime highs in the mid-50s are “pretty mild for us.”

El Paso’s Proposal to Reserve Capacity for Expansions Comes Under Fire

A group of natural gas producers and marketers, and East-of-California shippers have asked FERC to reject a tariff proposal in which El Paso Natural Gas seeks to establish procedures for reserving capacity for future pipe expansions, calling the proposal “premature” in light of all of the unresolved capacity-related cases that the pipeline is involved at the Commission.

ESAI Warns of Dependence on Natural Gas

There are dangers down the road in relying solely on natural gas-fired electricity generation for both companies and consumers, according to Energy Security Analysis Inc. (ESAI) in its Natural Gas Power Alert released last week. The firm said the risk of not diversifying a portfolio with coal-fired or oil-fired generation greatly increases the exposure of a company or a state to the volatile natural gas market.
