North American Gas Trading Stabilizes, Sales Climb 4%

Devastating storms in the third quarter jolted energy markets and sent natural gas prices soaring, but despite the upheaval in prices and the continuing entry of new investment bankers into the marketplace, natural gas trading in North America continues to stabilize and grow, up an estimated 4%, to 96.45 Bcf/d from 92.81 Bcf/d a year ago, according to NGI’s latest gas marketer survey.

High Gas Prices Trigger Resurgence in Coal-Fired Power Generation

Soaring natural gas prices and a growing interest in fuel diversity for power generation is driving a major resurgence in plans to develop coal-fired power plants, according to Scott Klara, deputy director for the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Coal and Power at DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). The latest DOE statistics show about 129 proposed coal-fired power plants (77 GW) will be developed over the next 20 years, a $104 billion investment.

Western States Fend Off Sweltering Temps, Soaring Demand

Power grids in California, Nevada and Arizona last week fended off soaring temperatures and a resulting flood of demand for electricity. Power providers in Nevada and Arizona were reporting new records for system peaks, while the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) declared restricted maintenance days for power facilities and asked Californians to reduce energy usage.
