Altra Shuts Down Electronic Natural Gas Trading

Altra has finally thrown in the towel in the electronic natural gas trading arena. Overwhelming competition over the past few years from a number of different systems, some of which also have been forced out of the business, pressured Altra to announce it will shut down the Altrade system on March 31. All natural gas trades and transactions in the system will continue as scheduled until that date, the company told customers in a letter last week.

Enron Corp.’s incredible stumble in the stock market and continued concerns by the investment community may offer some inroads for other energy companies that have long envied the world’s largest energy trader’s ability to capture and sustain its huge share of the marketplace. Some analysts are even speculating that Enron could possibly become a takeover target, an irony considering it has long been considered the model energy marketer that has set the gold standard for others to follow.

El Paso Blast Kills 10; Shuts Down South Mainline

Federal and company investigators Monday swarmed over the sceneof the devastating El Paso Natural Gas mainline explosion thaterupted near daybreak Saturday, engulfing a party of weekendcampers along the Pecos River near Carlsbad, NM, and killing 10people. Two other persons were hospitalized in critical condition.

El Paso Re-Opens One Line; Shuts Down Another

The Department of Transportation (DOT) on Friday gave El Paso Natural Gas the go-ahead to re-start on a restricted basis the South Mainline line that ruptured and caused the fatal explosion in New Mexico nearly a year ago (see Daily GPI, Aug. 22, 2000), interrupting some supplies to the southwestern and California gas markets for weeks and months afterward.

The offshore Destin Pipeline shut in about 600 MMcf/d of gasthat was flowing on its system Sunday but is expected to resumeflows sometime today pending repairs to a liquids pipelinedownstream of the Pascagoula gas processing plant.
