Oregon Legislative Proposal Targets LNG Developers

In a reprise of legislation that died in committee last year, a proposal has surfaced at the opening of the new session for the Oregon Legislature requiring a needs assessment for any liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal or connecting pipeline tied to imports of new natural gas supplies into the state. The action is supposedly in response to the state’s three pending LNG terminal projects now in various stages of permitting (see Daily GPI, Jan. 4).

Futures Blow Off Holiday Steam to the Tune of 34.4 Cents

After pushing a few pennies higher in low-volume trading on Friday, the upward momentum appeared to run out heading into Monday’s regular session as the January natural gas contract plummeted back below $5. The prompt-month contract reached a low of $4.823 before closing out the day at $4.848, down 34.4 cents from Friday’s finish.

January Futures Punch North of $5 Despite Another Storage Addition

The January natural gas futures contract, in its first regular session as the front month, Wednesday surprised most traders by shooting nearly 40 cents higher despite ample gas inventories and the lack of any real winter chill on the immediate horizon. Word that 2 Bcf had been injected into underground storage for the week ending Nov. 20 only added fuel to the bulls’ fire.

Traders on Tuesday were taking a breather from the recent freefall in natural gas futures as the November contract treaded water for a majority of the session before closing at $4.557, up 4.4 cents from Monday’s close.

Seven Year Lows Not Low Enough, Market Watchers Say

Not content with the prior session’s punch below the psychological $3 price level to a seven-year low, the bearish natural gas futures movement found follow-through on Friday to notch a new low for the move at $2.776 before closing out the day at $2.804, down 14.1 cents from Thursday and 43.4 cents lower than the previous week’s finish.

Futures Inch Higher as Traders Await CFTC Action, Fresh Storage Data

Natural gas futures turned in a fairly calm regular session on Wednesday as at least one trader hypothesized that the market was sidetracked by the much-publicized Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) hearing on position limits in the energy futures arena. The prompt-month contract closed Wednesday at $4.042, up 4.1 cents from Tuesday’s finish.

Rally Capped, But Futures Retain Most of Monday’s Gains

The entire energy complex took its foot off the accelerator on Tuesday following the significant gains racked up in Monday’s session. September natural gas futures ended up dropping three pennies to $4.001, while September crude futures backed off 16 cents to $71.42/bbl.

Futures Fall Below $4 After Storm Fails to Materialize

August natural gas wasted no time in making its mark Monday on the futures market in its first regular session action as the front-month contract, shedding 16.1 cents to close at $3.944 as the fear premium associated with a possible storm in the Gulf of Mexico over the weekend fully dissipated.

July Expires 10.5 Cents Higher on Tropical Threat

Aided by a developing storm system in the tropics, July natural gas futures pushed higher for much of Friday’s regular session. The expiring contract touched the psychological $4 level just prior to going off the board at $3.949, up 10.5 cents from Thursday’s finish but 8.3 cents lower than the previous week’s close. The August contract gained 11.6 cents to $4.105 on Friday.
