Columbia Sells Electric Subsidiary for $200 M

Columbia Energy Group has entered into an agreement with Orion Power Holdings of Baltimore, MD, to sell all of the outstanding shares of its subsidiary Columbia Electric Corp. for approximately $200 million in cash plus the assumption of project-related debt. Included in the deal is 4,000 MW of capacity in construction and development phases.

To expand its exploration and development projects, Calgary’sWestminster Resources Ltd. will sell all of its Canadian oil andgas assets to AEC Oil & Gas for $62.7 million in cash under anagreement reached yesterday by the companies. Closing is set forOct. 19.

TransCanada Pipelines Sells More Midstream

TransCanada Pipelines Ltd is on the move again. A week ago thecompany’s power subsidiary purchased Westcoast Energy’s interests infive Canadian cogeneration plants in a deal valued at C$512million. This week, its midstream subsidiary is selling its naturalgas gathering and processing assets in Saskatchewan to newcomer VISTAMidstream Solutions Ltd (see Daily GPI, Sept. 8).

Southern Wholesale Energy, the trading arm of Southern Company,signed a wholesale power supply contract with Dynegy Energy toprovide 260 MW of power from its excess wholesale capacity. Theagreement is the second wholesale power agreement between the twocompanies within the last six months.

Thecontracts cover commercial, industrial and institutional customersspread around the country. The two San Francisco-based companieswould not disclose terms of the deal, but said it is expected toclose in mid-July.

Columbia Sells Cove Point LNG to Williams

Despite current plans to reactivate LNG imports and expand the Cove Point LNG plant, Columbia Energy Group has decided the Lusby, MD-based facility does not fit into its core group of assets. The company announced plans last week to sell Cove Point and a related pipeline to Williams Gas Pipeline for $150 million. The sale is subject to clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act but should be completed by July 2000, the companies said.
