South Jersey Touts Storage Strategy, Files 4.4% Rate Cut

South Jersey Gas said because of its storage-based hedging strategy it will save its average customer about $62 next year. The company has promise an extra holiday gift this year in the form of a 4.4% rate reduction.

FERC OKs Trunkline Plan to Trim Lake Charles LNG Project, Save $11M

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has given CMS Trunkline LNG Co. LLC the green light to trim away some of the facilities planned for the expansion of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal near Lake Charles, LA, a move that is expected to reduce project costs by $11 million and cut cost of service by $3.2 million a year. The cost of the revised project was pegged at $166 million.

Kerr-McGee Expects to Save $45 Million Through Employee Cuts

Kerr-McGee Corp. has announced it will cut its U.S. non-union workforce by 7-9% or up to 250 employees in order to reduce costs. The job reductions and a plan to mitigate $15 million of future annual medical and pension expenses is expected to add up to about $45 million in savings.

College Campus Saves $1 Million with SoCalGas Cogen Program

A small university campus expects to save $1 million annually on its energy bill and satisfy 98% of its energy needs through a new high-efficiency, 1 MW cogeneration system that was underwritten with a $708,000 award from Sempra Energy’s Los Angeles-based Southern California Gas Co. utility. The rebate was part of SoCal’s state-authorized $54 million, four-year self-generation program.

CA Reworks Power Deal with Morgan Stanley to Save $41 Million

California officials announced Friday the state has reworked a relatively small 50 MW, $209 million power deal with Morgan Stanley that reduces its volumes and price, along with various terms, equating to a $41 million savings to the state and an option to purchase future natural gas tied to the electricity contract at indexed prices.

EPA’s Gas STAR Program Saves 42 Bcf of Gas, or $126M in 2001

Companies from all sectors of the gas industry were able to save a total of 42 Bcf of gas, or about $126 million at a gas value of $3/Mcf, by reducing methane emissions from unit operations and equipment leaks, according to annual results recently released on the Natural Gas STAR Program by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA said the savings surpassed the STAR program’s 40 Bcf goal for 2001.

Natural gas marketers might save a few pennies on each trade by doing their business online rather than over the phone, and they probably will handle more volume, but at some point in time it’s going to come back to haunt them, said Kevin Huntsman of Mastio & Company. Mastio just released its fifth customer satisfaction ranking of gas marketers, and the results are a little scary for many of the mega marketers, who boast about huge gas volumes but often have very few satisfied customers.
