Rocky Mountain natural gas production is at a crawl and the economy isn’t moving any faster, but El Paso Corp.’s Ruby Pipeline Project is on track to begin service in 2011, an executive said Monday.

Steep declines in North American drilling activity, especially in the Rocky Mountains, Permian Basin and Midcontinent, pushed down Halliburton’s 1Q2009 earnings from a year ago and forced a 12% reduction to its U.S. and Canadian workforce, the CEO said last week. A sharp drop in U.S. gas drilling also sent Schlumberger Ltd.’s quarterly profits down 28%.

Rocky Mountain natural gas producers waited a long time to have ample pipeline capacity to get their production to market. What a shame that now that they have the Rockies Express Pipeline (REX) they also find themselves in the midst of a humbling continentwide gas price collapse.

Pinnacle Gas Resources Inc., a junior explorer that focuses on coalbed methane (CBM) resources in the Rocky Mountains, has sold some undeveloped acreage and gas gathering assets in Wyoming for $3.2 million. Some of the proceeds will be used to pay down debt.

El Paso Corp.’s push to secure approval for its proposed Ruby Pipeline, which would carry natural gas supplies from the Rocky Mountains to West Coast markets, appears to be coming at an opportune time environmentally, and in certain respects, politically.
