EPA Presses FERC to Study Environmental Impact of Shale Gas

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has called on FERC to expand the scope of its environmental analysis of Dominion Cove Point’s proposed liquefaction facilities, looking into the “foreseeable future” and exceeding its jurisdiction to include an investigation into the “indirect effects” related to natural gas drilling and combustion.

New Brunswick Should Avoid Shale Moratorium, Researcher Says

New Brunswick should require a portion of any natural gas found in its shale plays be set aside for use in the province and should put in place a water use strategy for the shale gas industry, but it should not place a moratorium on the industry, according to a report by Louis LaPierre, a professor emeritus in biology at the University of Moncton.

Construction of Millennium Pipeline Co. LLC’s Minisink Compressor project has been approved by FERC “after a long and intensive review,” the company said. The project, which consists of two 6,130 hp compressors in Minisink, NY, would increase deliverability to the eastern end of the pipeline to about 675,000 Dth/d. Millennium filed for the project in July 2011. Southwestern Energy Services Co., an anchor shipper, urged the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to approve the expansion by Feb. 1 so that it could be in operation by the start of the winter heating season, Nov. 1. However, Commission staff sought consideration of an alternative compressor station site (see Daily GPI, Jan. 9).

The United States likely will add 11 Bcf/d of natural gas to its reserves this year at total finding, development and completion costs under $3.00/Mcf, while a review of 45,000 unconventional oil wells is finding “tremendous” growth in oil reserves, preliminary IHS Inc. data indicate.

Chesapeake Vows to Appeal $100M Gas Lease Judgment

Chesapeake Energy Corp. on Wednesday said it would appeal a U.S. District Court decision Tuesday that ordered the producer to pay more than $100 million for reneging on agreements to purchase some natural gas mineral rights in Texas four years ago.
