The National Petroleum Council (NPC) voted last Wednesday to conduct a comprehensive new study on natural gas at the request of the Department of Energy to “examine the potential implications of new supplies, new technologies, new perceptions of risk, and other evolving market conditions that may affect the potential for natural gas demand, supplies and delivery through 2025.”

Examiner Appointed to Monitor Enron Funds

Responding to creditor’s concerns, Enron’s bankruptcy court judge has granted a request for the appointment of an examiner to monitor cash flow at Enron North America. Judge Arthur J. Gonzalez appeased creditors by approving the installation of an examiner, but refused their demands that Enron N.A. be allowed to control its own finances.

Enron Canada Faces Bankruptcy After Judge Rejects Stay Request

A Calgary judge on Thursday rejected a bid by Enron Canada, a unit of Enron Corp., for a court order to prevent contract cancellations by Canadian marketers and producers. The move effectively will push Enron Canada into insolvency and bankruptcy is expected.

BC Gas Withdraws Rate Hike Request

BC Gas said Monday that it has decided to withdraw its application for a rate hike that would have increased natural gas bills by approximately 2% in 2002. Due to a number of questions and regulatory issues relating to its pending Centra Gas BC acquisition, BC Gas CEO John Reid said it makes sense to hold back on the rate increase at this time.

Maritimes Moves Toward Expansion; U.S. Shippers Request 1.3 Bcf/d

Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline (Maritimes) said it received nominations for 1.7 Bcf/d of new transportation capacity on the Canadian portion of its pipeline system and 1.3 Bcf/d on the U.S. portion in an open season for its proposed $380 million Phase IV expansion project. Local distribution companies, gas-fired electric generators and third-party marketers were among those submitting substantial requests for transportation services, indicating a sizable market for natural gas reserves from eastern Canada, Maritimes said.
