Traders to Reassess Bullish Strategies; Futures Mixed

March natural gas futures eased Tuesday as traders elected to discount both supportive weather reports and sharply higher oil prices caused by strife in North Africa and the Middle East. March fell 0.9 cent to $3.867 and April added 0.1 cent to $3.907. March crude oil bounded higher $7.37 to $93.57/bbl.

Computers, Tight Stops, Weather Reports Send Futures Reeling

Natural gas futures retreated Monday as traders quickly reacted to reports of some moderation in private weather forecasts while others attributed the magnitude of the decline to computer-driven sell orders. At the close February natural gas fell 15.6 cents to $4.580 and March retreated 14.5 cents to $4.598. March crude oil lost $1.24 to $87.87/bbl.

Futures Fall Despite Large Storage Draw, Downward Revision

Despite at least two revisions in some previous reports that made Thursday morning’s news of a 184 Bcf draw for the week ending Dec. 17 feel more like a 193 Bcf draw to the market, natural gas futures traders remained largely unimpressed. Trading a shortened session Thursday ahead of the long Christmas holiday weekend, the January contract recorded a $4.052 to $4.174 range before closing at $4.083, down 6.9 cents from Wednesday’s finish, but 1.7 cents higher than the previous week’s close.

BLM Gives Initial OK to State Oil Shale Projects

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) said Wednesday three nominations for oil shale research, development and demonstration (RD&D) leases have been approved for Colorado and Utah that would allow the proponents to test the feasibility of various oil shale recovery technologies on public lands.
