With its board recommending that shareholders reject the unsolicited Exelon Corp. offer and proposed expansion of its board, Princeton, NJ-based NRG Energy Inc. has mailed proxy materials to shareholders for its July 21 annual meeting. Consumer Advocate Opposes Dominion East Ohio Rate Hike

Ohio regulators should reject Dominion East Ohio’s request to increase rates because the utility has failed to prove its need, the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel (OCC) said in testimony before the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) last week. Further, the OCC opposes a proposal to increase the proportion of distribution costs recovered from a fixed rather than a volumetric charge.

FERC Asked to Reject Southwest Gas Cost Study, Impose Rate Relief

The self-styled “Panhandle complainants” have called on FERC to reject a cost-and-revenue study submitted by Southwest Gas Storage and to provide interim rate relief for storage customers, saying that the study does not represent a true picture of the company’s cost-of-service because it includes costs related to a new project at its North Hopeton storage field in Oklahoma. The project application, which was filed after FERC ordered the cost-and-revenue study, skews the cost data, the complainants said.

Canadian Superior Continues Solicitation of Canada Southern’s Shareholders

Responding to Canada Southern Petroleum Ltd.’s latest statement Friday that shareholders should reject Canadian Superior Energy Inc.’s amended bid and tender their shares to Canadian Oil Sands’ (COS) offer (see Daily GPI, Aug. 14), Canadian Superior said Monday that it is “surprised” by Canada Southern’s “pessimistic view of its own Arctic natural gas interests.” Canada Southern also reported Monday that its 2Q2006 earnings were weaker than normal due to the company’s “hostile takeover defense” from Petro-Canada, which has since let its bid expire (see Daily GPI, July 13).
