BLM Finds Plenty of Gas on Federal Lands, Plenty of Access Restrictions

A new inventory of natural gas and oil on 99 million acres of federal land in 11 major geographic areas of the United States found that only 13% of the gas and 3% of the oil resources are recoverable under standard leasing terms, such as minimizing impacts on environmental and cultural resources.

Alberta Estimated to Hold 223 Tcf of Conventional Natural Gas

The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (AEUB) and Canada’s National Energy Board (NEB) have increased their estimate of the total recoverable conventional natural gas resource in Alberta to 223 Tcf, or up about 7% from the NEB’s estimate in 2004 and 12% more than the last estimate by the AEUB, according to a new joint report by the agencies.

USGS Estimates 37.5 Tcf of Recoverable Gas on Alaska’s Central North Slope

A new U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) assessment estimates that there is about 37.5 Tcf of undiscovered but technically recoverable natural gas resources, 478 million bbl of natural gas liquids and 4 billion bbl of oil in the central part of the Alaska North Slope and the adjacent state offshore area.

Michigan Commission Cuts Mich Con’s Gas Cost Recovery

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) has approved an amended gas cost recovery (GCR) plan for Michigan Consolidated Gas Co. (Mich Con), reducing the recoverable amount for 2002 by more than $26 million, and criticizing the company’s policy of decreasing low cost storage reserves to serve customers in 2001 and signing higher fixed priced contracts for 2002.

Marathon, Unocal Discover Gas Prospect in Southern Alaska

Marathon Oil Co. and Unocal Corp. reported a significant natural gas discovery of about 90 Bcf of gross proven recoverable gas reserves on the Ninilchik Prospect on the Kenai Peninsula, approximately 35 miles south of Kenai, AK. Marathon is operator of the well and the 25,000-acre prospect with a 60% working interest, while Unocal Alaska holds the remaining 40%.
