CA Governor Silent on Energy in State-of-State Address

Five years after a wholesale energy market crisis with lasting economic and political ramifications, one of which was his election to California’s highest office two years ago, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger late Thursday in his state-of-the-state address only once referred to energy during a 20-minute, 2,500-word speech in Sacramento. When talking about environmental and state infrastructure programs the “e-word” never crossed the former movie actor’s lips.

Futures Settle Significantly Higher Following Supportive 58 Bcf Storage Injection

Natural gas futures trading on Thursday continued to reflect the industry’s uncertainty as to what the long-term ramifications of Hurricane Katrina will be on the commodity. After receiving a somewhat bullish 58 Bcf storage report, October natural gas seesawed back and forth for the remainder of the session before settling at a record $11.757, up 28.5 cents from Wednesday.

All See Demand as Weak, But Most Prices Rise Anyway

While gas traders, especially those who deal with western points, pondered the ramifications of the PG&E bankruptcy filing (see related story), most of the cash market saw moderate firmness Friday. A large majority of the upticks were in the vicinity of a dime, although scattered points rose as much as about 15 cents and others were up only about a nickel. There were small declines in the Rockies and substantially larger ones in California.
