Futures Finish Week 75.8 Cents Higher at $7.69

Staying strong at the end of a meteoric week, July natural gas futures kept pushing higher Friday, reaching a high of $7.73 before settling at $7.69, up 7.7 cents on the day but a whopping 75.8 cents higher than last week’s settle.

APGA Lauds Administration Leadership on New Roadless Rule

The American Public Gas Association (APGA) praised the Bush administration in a letter to the president on Wednesday for providing leadership in pushing through a new roadless rule governing national forest access and management. APGA estimates the new rule will provide access to as much as 11-23 Tcf of natural gas resources that were previously off limits. However, a Department of Agriculture (USDA) official said it is premature to draw that conclusion.

Natural Gas Futures Kept in Check By Crude, Heating Oil Declines

After pushing the February contract up to a $6.51 high just after 11 a.m. (EST), gas futures traders encountered a little bit of vertigo in afternoon trading as the market crept lower instead of approaching $7. The prompt month settled 1.5 cents lower at $6.388, while March futures, poised to take over as prompt month in Thursday Access trading, closed down 2.3 cents at $6.421.

Late summer storms weighed on U.S. exploration and production companies in the third quarter, pushing down oil and natural gas output in North America for most of the largest producers. On Friday, ChevronTexaco Corp. and Anadarko Petroleum Corp. both reported strong earnings but mediocre production, while Pioneer Natural Resources reported mediocre income — because of tax changes — but stronger U.S. natural gas output.

Producers, TransCanada Give High Marks to Congress for Passing Alaska Pipe Proposal

Alaska’s natural gas producers and TransCanada Corp. gave high marks Tuesday to Congress for pushing through legislation to award $18 billion in federal loan guarantees for the construction of a mega-gas pipeline from the North Slope to the Lower 48 states, to provide tax incentives for the pipeline, and to expedite and streamline the permitting process (see Daily GPI, Oct. 12).
