El Paso E&P Builds in Midcontinent with Peoples Energy Purchase

Houston-based El Paso Corp.’s exploration and production (E&P) subsidiary plans to pump up the volume in some of its key domestic tight gas plays with the $875 million cash purchase of Peoples Energy Production Co. The transaction, which was announced Friday, adds more than 600 proved and probable drilling locations in the ArkLaTex, Texas Gulf Coast, San Juan and Arkoma basins, and in Mississippi.

El Paso took Belen Station’s #1 turbine down Tuesday to investigate a problem with the oil pump. The unit will remain down Wednesday. Previously scheduled work at Caprock Station will also occur Wednesday. The ongoing force majeure outage of Belen’s #2 unit will continue through Feb. 15, El Paso said. Capacity of the San Juan Crossover will be reduced by 35 MMcf/d from a base capacity of 650 MMcf/d Wednesday through Feb. 15.

Sendout capacity at the Trunkline LNG facility in Lake Charles, LA will be limited to 900,000 Dth/d during pump maintenance beginning Feb. 10. Peaking sendout is expected to return to 1 million Dth/d on Feb. 15.

Kerr-McGee Corp. will spend about 20% more in 2005 to pump up exploration efforts in the Rockies, the company said last week. Production is expected to rise 15-19% over this year, with oil and natural gas output ranging between 355,000-370,000 boe/d, weighted 55% to natural gas and 45% to liquids.
