UGI Energy Services Inc. and Capitol Energy Ventures Corp. have taken firm capacity on the proposed Commonwealth Pipeline, making them anchor shippers on the project, which is sponsored by Inergy Midstream LP, UGI Energy and Capitol Energy. The contracts are for 10 years at negotiated rates. Commonwealth would provide a path for bringing gas produced in the Marcellus and Utica shale plays to markets in central and southeastern Pennsylvania and the greater Mid-Atlantic region (see Shale Daily, May 8). The proposed interstate pipeline will consist initially of 120 miles of 30-inch diameter pipeline extending from the southern terminus of the Inergy Midstream’s MARC I Pipeline in Lycoming County, PA, to several points of interconnection in southeastern Pennsylvania with other interstate pipelines, including NiSource Gas Transmission and Storage, Texas Eastern Transmission Co., Transco Pipeline, and Eastern Shore Natural Gas Co.
Dominion Resources Eyes Utica, Marcellus Midstream
If there is a “bet-the-farm” opportunity in natural gas infrastructure, it lies in the potential production growth in the Utica and Marcellus shale formations, according to Mark McGettrick, CFO of Dominion Resources in Virginia.
PDC Energy Going It Alone in Utica Shale
PDC Energy Inc. received several joint ownership and development proposals for its Utica Shale position in southeast Ohio from potential joint venture (JV) partners, but they “do not meet PDC’s value expectations,” so the Denver-based company will pursue development in the play independently.
Methane Hydrates Research Gets $5.6M Boost from DOE
The Department of Energy (DOE) on Friday said it will invest $5.6 million in more than a dozen research projects to increase understanding of the potential of methane hydrates as an energy source.
DOE: Shales Make Natural Gas ‘Cost-Effective’ for Power Gen
The nation’s natural gas resources, which have grown with the expanded potential of shale plays — including as much as 20 years supply from the Marcellus Shale — can be used to cost-effectively generate electricity, and any environmental burdens will come primarily from combustion when the fuel is used, not when it is extracted, according to a report from the Department of Energy (DOE).
Shale Plays Make Gas ‘Cost-Effective’ for Electricity Generation

Japan, India Said to Urge U.S. to Allow LNG Exports
Two potential beneficiaries of relatively cheap North American natural gas supplies, Japan and India, reportedly both have been urging the Obama administration to open liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports as soon as possible, according to the project manager for one of the export terminal proposals.
Forest Oil Unloads East Texas Eagle Ford Gathering for $34M
One month after announcing that it was abandoning a potential partnership strategy to help develop its Eagle Ford Shale acreage in favor of a “go-it-alone plan,” Denver-based Forest Oil Corp. said it has entered into an agreement to sell the majority of its East Texas natural gas gathering assets to a subsidiary of Tristate Midstream II LLC for proceeds of $34 million.
New York Energy Official Lauds Natural Gas As ‘Bridge Fuel’
An energy official in New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration said natural gas is being viewed as a potential “bridge fuel” to the future, when technological advances will presumably open the door for renewables.
